Non-plastic litter box alternatives

Eco friendly and litter boxes do usually not go together, since most litter boxes are made of plastic. Not exactly a sustinable or environmentally friendly material.

Want to say NO to plastic? We all know that we should, but it can be really difficult sometimes. Finding a suitable litter box for your cat is one of those times. Especially since you will need your cat’s approval, as well as fulfilling your environmental ideals.

When we say that most litter boxes are made of plastic, the reality, as you probably know, is that almost all litter boxes today are made from this unsustainable material. Looking for a litter box at your local pet shop, plastic will most likely be your only option.

Considering how many cat owners there are who need one or more litter boxes for their cat (or cats) – the general advice is to have one litter box per cat, plus one – that adds up to a lot of plastic.

This is why we have searched the web to find some more eco friendly alternatives for you and your cat (and the planet).

Eco friendly stainless steel and bamboo

It turns out that there are actually some really good options avaliable. You just will not find them in your average pet shop yet.

By the power of the Internet, we present to you, metal and bamboo litter boxes. Much better for the environment, and they look pretty darn good too! Not that your cat will care of course. They tend to be more particular when it comes to the size of their litter box, and the shape, but not so much the home decor part.

As you will see, all the eco friendly litter boxes listed here are open, meaning that they are not “hooded” or covered in any way. Luckily, this is what most cats prefere. With that said, most cats does not mean all cats, so if your cat likes a hooded litter box, a litter box cover could be the solution.

Metal litter boxes

The pros

Litter boxes made from metal, more accurately stainless steel. These do not absorb odor like plastic ones do, so they will last longer and help reduce odor. A big plus for any cat owner. Cats generally do not like to use dirty litter boxes, so your cat will probably give it a thumbs (or claw…) up too.

Some of these litter boxes have been modified to be non-slip, so that is another plus. Especially since many keep their litter box on their bathroom floor tiles, and some cats can be quite the eager little diggers after completing their business.

The metal litter boxes also have a stylish modern look, which may help a bit when considering the con of this alternative: Price.

The con

The price ranges from about $40-60, some with free shipping. They are definitely pricier that the plastic ones that are on the cheaper side, but remember that the stainless steel boxes will last much longer. It might be the last litter box you ever have to buy.

Bamboo litter boxes

When it comes to bamboo litter boxes, there are not that many products to choose from yet. Hopefully this will change, since bamboo is such an eco friendly and versatile material.

The pros

On the plus side, the litter boxes of bamboo that do exist, are not only made from bamboo, but recycled bamboo. Yay! They also come in a variety of pretty colors to match the interior of your home.

The company that makes them is called Beco Pets. It is a UK based company, but the litter boxes are also avaliable in US (see Where to Buy section).

Because Beco Pets is a UK based business, they refer to the product as litter trays. This might be why they do not always appear in searches right away, and require a little more digging to find

Anyways, litter box or litter tray – no matter what they are called, they are a much better option than the plastic kind. They are also more pleasant to look at than many of them.

The con

The one drawback could be the size, as they might be too small for larger cats. However, if you have a smaller cat and are looking for an open litter box, you might just have found the perfect fit here!
